Brick Masonry Services FAQs
I need a brick feature repaired. Can you get the same kind of bricks as a replacement for the damaged ones?
We do our best to source bricks that are closest to your existing ones. More often than not, we can find the exact type of brick that was used in the original structure. However, in some cases, the bricks have gone out of style and are no longer manufactured. In which case, we hunt for the closest match, considering the color and texture of the existing brick.
What are the advantages of using bricks for structures?
Brick structures are classic. They exude strength and they are not at all difficult to maintain. Here are just a couple of reasons why we love building with brick:
What is the difference between sandfaced and tumbled brick?
Sandfaced bricks have sand baked into their exteriors, giving them a more textured look and feel. This technique adds more depth to the brick structure.
Tumbled bricks are agitated during the manufacturing process to give it that imperfect rustic look. There are three types of brick tumbling, namely: washed tumble, estate tumble, and tumbled edge. All of these methods create bricks with a lot of character and uniqueness.
What are brickwork bonds?
A lot of people think brickwork bonds refer to mortar joints. Mortar joints are the spaces between bricks, or what layman calls grout. Brickwork bonds refer to the pattern in which the brick is arranged.
What is a jack arch?
Jack arches are specially arranged bricks that are meant to decorate doors and windows. In the middle of the arch is something called a keystone, a triangular shaped stone made of clay or limestone, which acts as support and as a focal point.
I ordered two batches of the same kind of brick. Why do they look different?
You might have gotten organic bricks, and no two of them are exactly alike. An easy solution to this is arranging them in a deliberate pattern to highlight the differences in color and texture. Bricks can also be painted over if you would like that.
How should bricks be maintained?
Mortar, or the white powder that forms on the surface of bricks, is caused by the dissolving salt minerals in the brick. These can usually be rinsed off with water. We strongly advise that you do not use high-pressure washers to clean bricks and do not use any harsh chemicals like bleach and muriatic acid. If you have a brick wall near vegetation, you shouldn’t let plants like ivy climb up the bricks. The root tendrils could grow into the brick and ruin its mortar joints. If there is an overgrowth of plant in your walls, call us to take of it for you as removing the plants yourself could damage the wall even further.
The previous owners of my home painted over the bricks but I want to reveal their natural color. What should I do?
First of all, put down the sandblaster. Using a lot of pressure to sand away the surface of the brick will damage them. You will expose the inner portion of the brick, which is not as strong against natural elements. Call us to get rid of the paint using the right tools and a gentler technique.
